Remembrance Day
Wednesday, 11th November 2020 saw DFPA recognise the importance and significance of Remembrance Day. All classes marked the occasion in different ways, using art, discussions, videos and class bubble collective gathering to explore and reflect on the sacrifices made during the war by service men and women.
Children who are part of the Scouting and Guiding Movement came to school dressed in their Rainbow, Brownie, Beaver and Cub uniforms, looking very smart.

In every class, the school council representatives (or teacher in the younger classes) read the famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae, followed by the class observing the poignant two-minute silence at 11:00am. It was very moving to see such respect and consideration shown by all our children.
In the afternoon, some of the classes produced beautiful artwork to commemorate the day, such as this poppy watercolour in Years 4 and 5, painted over the poem the children read earlier in the day. In Year 6, the children could align their new knowledge gained during their World War Two topic with Remembrance Day, making it even more meaningful. Year 5 even managed a socially distanced walk (with parent/carer permissions) to the War Memorial at St Leonard’s Church. As they observed the names, they had conversations about their own family links to the war, keeping memories very much alive into modern day.
